This technique may be relevant for those working with the Acrobat SDK as this also uses ANSI-C and an object orientated approach.

Object-oriented programming is the current cure-all - although it has been around for much more then ten years. At the core, there is little more to it then finally applying the good programming principles which we have been taught for more then twenty years. C++ (Eiffel, Oberon-2, Smalltalk ... take your pick) is the New Language because it is object-oriented - although you need not use it that way if you do not want to (or know how to), and it turns out that you can do just as well with plain ANSI-C. Only object-orientation permits code reuse between projects ? although the idea of subroutines is as old as computers and good programmers always carried their toolkits and libraries with them.

This book is not going to praise object-oriented programming or condemn the Old Way. We are simply going to use ANSI-C to discover how object-oriented programming is done, what its techniques are, why they help us solve bigger problems, and how we harness generality and program to catch mistakes earlier. Along the way we encounter all the jargon - classes, inheritance, instances, linkage, methods, objects, polymorphisms, and more - but we take it out of the realm of magic and see how it translates into the things we have known and done all along.

"Why use my own set of notes when there are over a dozen textbooks on this subject? Just ask anyone who has had to learn this material from one of the existing texts :-). Seriously, though, existing texts fall into two categories: those written by computer architects and those written by programmers.

The problem with any text written by an computer architect is that the text is essentially a computer architecture textbook. Machine organization is not computer architecture. It is a small subset of computer architecture. A machine organization course should cover those architectural features of immediate importance to three types of programmers: those who need to write fast and/or short code, those who write compilers (who need to write programs that write short and fast code), and those who will actually spend part of their lifetimes writing assembly language code for a living (a much bigger number than academians will admit)."

Thinking in C++

       Bruce Eckel has kindly provided his book "Thinking in C++, Second Edition" free of charge to on-line readers. The book is in beta form and comprises two volumes. Volume 1 was completed on January 13, 2000. The current version is TIC2V and Volume 1 will be published by Prentice Hall around March 1, 2000. Volume 2, last updated on September 20, will be published in late 2000.

Bruce says, "This is a beta version of the book. Some of it is in a very early form. You can probably get a pretty good idea which parts are rough, and which ones are supposed to be polished."

The book is excellent for beginners who have never seen an IDE before. The author uses the term C# where he should use the term "Visual Studio .NET" instead. C# is a programming language. For instance, the second chapter is titled "Navigating C#" but he really talks about navigating the IDE. I suspect a search-replace of C# to VB.NET you could convert it into a VB.NET book.
(of course with a bit more than that).
I was looking for a book to quickly learn the LANGUAGE C#, not a study of Visual Studio .NET, which takes all of about 1 hour or less for an experienced software developer to learn. If the title were changed to "Teach Yourself Visual Studio.NET in 24 hours", I'd give it 5 stars.
Bottom line, if you are a C++ or Java software engineer who wants to come up to speed on C#, this is not the book for you.
